Umbrellas Part Deux

Due to recent News story about society and the disgusting people that occupy it I am rethinking the uselessness of the umbrella. Perhaps rain water is not the only liquid that it shelters us from. This is Nasty.

In unrelated news

...The Philadelphia Philles are the 2008 World Series Champions defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4 games to 1. Cole Hamels deservingly won the WS MVP award.

That is all.

My second online review was a movie that i happened to land on while flipping through the channels. What we came across is most certainly a new favorite of ours. Snoop Dogg's Hood Of Horrors is precisely as good as that name suggests.

bEgin the Off season

The off-season for MLB players, managers, coaches, GMs, and Owners may begin tonight after Cole Hamels and the Phllies win the world series. If the Rays decide to play as the Devil Rays, as they played last night, in tonight's Game 5 it will most certainly be over. The Rays really need to pull it together quick against the opponents top pitcher. Rays hitters must step up and come through in clutch situations to prove that they belong here. We believed in the Rays after games 1 and 2 in which they showed us that they were an even match for the Phils. But after throwing the game away on Saturday night and really letting it rain on Sunday night, we cannot tell if they really are this good. We shall see if their hearts are as strong as their potentials tonight.

Thirsty?

Ok well since i was being a good student for once i was unable to watch Game 2. The Rays won on the back of starting pitcher James Shields and the heart of their order delivering 3 of the four rbis.

FREE TACO!

Perhaps the most interesting part of this game came in the fifth inning when Jason Bartlett stole 2nd Base and earned everyone in the country a free Taco Bell Taco. YOu can claim your 'stolen' taco on Tuesday October 28th between 2 and 6 pm.

Perhaps not.
Game One was the pitching duel that we were supposed to see. Kazmir did not have his best stuff as he is clearly suffering from some post-season jitters. His postseason ERA is almost one full run higher than his regular season stat. Kazmir gave up an early 2 run bomb to Chase Utley in the first inning but kept the Rays close, only giving up one more run in the 4th to give the Phillies 3 runs on the night. Hamels on the other hand went 7 strong innings. Giving up a solo shot to Crawford in the 4th and then an RBI double to Iwamura in the 5th are the only two blemishes appearing on his line.
So many times in this game did you think that the momentum was beginning to shift to the Rays but all were in vain. The leadoff hitter for the Rays reached on a brain fart by both Hamels and Howard and could have been a major turning point early. But Iwamura was erased on a double play one batter later. Then in the 2nd inning BJ Upton threw out Victorino on a potential sac fly by Rollins. The next inning the Phillies led off with a double but then followed with three straight outs to leave the runner stranded on third. In the bottom half BJ Upton again hit into a doupble play to end the inning. This time however it was with the bases loaded and a prime opportunity to score was trashed. Then in the top of the fourth the Phillies plated their leadoff batter to put the Rays in a 3-0 hole. But then the tide shifted. Or so i had hoped. Crawford hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning. And then in the fifth Iwamura hit his RBI double to bring the Rays within one run. But in the sixth inning the Rays really seemed like they were going to start a rally after Ryan Howard booted a simple grounder and gave the Rays a leadoff runner. But on a non balk call by the umpire staff, Hamels erased the error by picking off Carlos Pena to stifle any further developments. This proved to be a game changer because after that point the Rays could not get any offense going and fell to the Phils 3-2 for a game one loss.

Maybe The World Isn't Coming To An End

So the Rays pulled it off and 'upset' the BoSox last night to win the American League Pennant. It wasn't an easy task for the young team that has never been a part of any truly meaningful game until this season. By holding the Sox to just 3 hits and 1 run over the 9 inning showdown. Dustin Pedroia accounted for the only run as she hit a solo shot in the first inning but Matt Garza shut the rest of the team down following the blast. The Devil Rays had been around for 10 season and seemingly learned every way possible to lose games. But this season, the first after dropping the word Devil from their name, they found out what it takes to win the games. The Rays showed that they have guts and can certainly pull off the World Series victory after stifling the sox who certainly held the momentum in the 7th game, having come back from a seven run deficit in game 5 and out dueling them in game 6 to force the deciding game. But this series win will not come without its challenges.

The Rays will be facing a strong Phillies team that has just about as much to prove as the team from Tampa. They came into this postseason as an afterthought behind the Cubs (this was going to be the year the curse of the goat was broken but is now just a century old losing streak), the Brewers (who had not won in as many years as the Phillies and were riding high on CCs and Sheets shoulders), and the Dodgers (who had Manny powering them to victory and Torre to lead the way as he had done in years past). They are even overcoming a championship drought that has plagued teams from the city of brotherly love. Philadelphia has not produced a champion in any major sport since the 76ers won the NBA Championship 25 years ago. It was 28 years ago since the Phillies have last won. Perhaps this is the end of the curse for these poor Pennsylvanians. Maybe more Penn teams will come out victorious as the steelers are pulling ahead in the AFC North and Penn State is ranked 3rd in BCS and may be on their way to a national championship game.

But, we shall wait and see who is victorious as the World Series is set to make history beginning on Wednesday night. Will the Rays overcome total disparity having the 29th lowest payroll for 2008, never having had a winning season, and proving to the world and themsleves that they have what it takes? Or will it truly be Sunny in Philadelphia once again?
First Pitch is Scheduled for 8pm on October 22nd at Tropicana Field in Tampa.

Malkovich Malkovich

If you have never seen the movie "Being John Malkovich" you would be like a lot of people. But you are doing yourself a great injustice. This movie contains one of the most complex and hilarious love triangles ever. Not to mention the best chimpanzee flashback/post-traumatic experience in movie history. Malkovich is hilarious as himself and even more so when he "becomes" himself by crawling through the mysterious tunnel to his brain. And Charlie Sheen has a mostly hilarious role as malkovich's good friend. Totally worth your while>!

American League bEAST

So the Rays won their first ever postseason series in decisive style over the Chicago White Sox, 3 games to 1. Up next is one of their main division rivals of the Boston Red Sox. Hopefully, for the sake of humanity, the Rays will come out of this best-of-seven series on top and represent the American League in the World Series.

The series begins in Tampa for games Friday and Saturday nights. The series will then move to Boston for games Monday and Tuesday. If necessary there will be another game, in Fenway Park, Thursday. Still if the series has not been decided the teams will travel back to Tropicana Field and finish games six and seven on Saturday and Sunday.

This series seems to have been building in suspense all season. The Rays have been the American League punching bag since the teams inception in 1998. They have had ten straight losing season until recently when they stormed the league with a record that challenged for the best in the Majors for much of the season, even finishing with the 2nd best in the league and 3rd overall. This season has proven that the Rays' have had enough and began fighting back, literally. On March 12, the Rays and perpetual AL East contenders of the Yankees had a bench clearing brawl resulting accusations of dirty plays in that game and the previous. Tensions also flared in a game with the Boston Red Sox. The benches cleared in June when both of these teams were vying for the top spot in the league. The Sox have been almost the polar opposite of the Rays franchise; having won two World Series Championships in 2004 and 2007 and appearing in the postseason every year since 2003. There is no doubt that the Rays would like to establish their own reign over the American League and keeping it in the American League East family. (After the Yankees and Red Sox dominated since the the mid 1990's)

There is no doubt that the tension and dislike will be relevant during this American League Championship. Here are the probable pitchers, with their regular season stats. Obviously these are subject to, and most likely will, change. (especially games 4,5,6,7)

Boston Tampa Bay
Game 1: Daisuke Matsuzaka (18-3 2.90) v James Shields (14-8 3.56)
Game 2: Josh Beckett (12-10 4.03) v Scott Kazmir (12-8 3.49)
Game 3: Jon Lester (16-6 3.21) v Matt Garza (11-9 3.70)
Game 4: Tim Wakefield (10-11 4.13) v Andy Sonnastine (13-9 4.38)
Game 5*: Daisuke Matsuzaka (18-3 2.90) v James Shields (14-8 3.56)
Game 6*: Josh Beckett (12-10 4.03) v Scott Kazmir (12-8 3.49)
Game 7*: Jon Lester (16-6 3.21) v Matt Garza (11-9 3.70)

Early Series Lead

It was easy to see the nerves of the Rays showing in the first game of their first post-season series in franchise history. The sold out stadium did not help. But the fears and anxieties were quickly put to rest when rookie Evan Longoria blasted a 2nd inning lead off homerun to put the Rays up 1-0 on the visiting Chicago White Sox. Starting pitcher James Shields held Chicago's offense to only 3 runs through 6 and a third innings. A three run homerun in the 3rd was the sox's only offense through the majority of the game. The Rays quickly responded to the 2 run deficit by posting three runs of their own, including another solo homerun by Longoria. The Rays added a couple more runs in the fifth and took a 6-3 lead. The fourth best bullpen in the league held the sox scoreless into the ninth inning when Dan Wheeler came in to save the first post-season win for the team. The pressure was on and the crowd was wild. The nerves showed again as he gave up a lead-off solo homerun to Paul Konerko. Suddenly it was a game again with a nervous closer on the mound and only a two run lead. But after the blast Wheeler settled down and easily retired Junior, Alexei Ramirez and Pierzynski in order to close out Game one.

Series: 1-0 Tampa Bay Lead

Player of the Game: Evan Longoria 3-3 2HR 3RBI

Next Game: 10/3 probables: Buehrle vs Kazmir

Other Notes:
Phillies Lead Brewers series 2-0
Dodgers Lead Cubs series 2-0
Red Sux lead Angels series 1-0

Amazing. I have found my inspiration for this blog.
After reliving the amazing run of the Cleveland Indians during the late 80s from worst in the league to the champions of the league. The Tampa Bay Rays are this years underdog. I will attempt to keep readers of my blog-o-rama informed of the progress of the Rays throughout this post-season. only the baseball gods know what is in store for weeks ahead.

The People's Elbow

It was just the other day that I was trying to write a story about how I learned to write or use some kind of writing technology. Obviously when I was learning to write I was a wee lad. So, thinking back to a certain practice that I used to enhance my ability to write brought back floods of memories of all kinds of nostalgic things that evolved alongside my writing education. The one that brought back the greatest and most intriguing stories were those of our modern day superheroes. The fantastic characters that I am referring to are those that make up the world of professional wrestling.

Immediately when I thought of this I mentioned to my housemates how great some of these old characters were. I (actually) thought that all 6 of them in the room would immediately start exchanging favorites. But to my dismay most had never even watched an episode of Raw/Smackdown/Nitro or any of the other primetime series associated with the WWE (stricken of its infamous WWF title be the World Wildlife Fund) or WCW. Thank the heavens for one of my cohorts, Zach, who blasted the shoulder shrugging silence with Ric Flair's trademark "Whoooooo!" It was then that the greatest superstars of sports entertainment were thrusted out of my memory's retirement home. The dos of us exchanged our favorite matches, our favorite pay-per-view specials, and even the routines and parties we had while watching these physical dramas. It was all for naught though when we realized that these were just memories and decided to move onto more important things. Like, what were we going to watch while we sat and recalled small anecdotes as they popped up.

A few days went by, the wrestling bug had passed and we had all but forgotten about our conversation a few days ago. Then like a savior sent from above, under the subscriptions category, there it was, glowing brighter than Sabel's blond flowing hair, was WWE 24/7. It was true. For a mere 8 dollars a month, four if the two of us split it, was a feature that allowed us to watch all our favorites, again!

The section was filled with, get this, Ric Flair's greatest speeches, three tag team championship matches featuring superstars from the mid 90s, and 1 episode each of the premier titles of the same years. The OnDemand feature also keeps viewers addicted by continuing the dramas that occur each week by adding the following weeks episode in succession. Monday Night Raw and WCW Nitro are my clear cut favorites of the era.

Suddenly the total joy, anxiety, nervousness, and all around hysteria that existed on each and every shows initiation rammed itself back into my heart. I found myself suddenly rooting for the likes of The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Triple H, Mankind, Cactus Jack, Dude Love, Jerry "The King" Lawler and a slew of all other amazing characters. Not only were the characters back from the dead but along with them came the notorious factions, a team of characters wrestling/fighting along side of each other.

Last weeks episode of "Raw" was originally aired on Sept. 22nd, 1997 and included the factions like The Nation of Domination whose members went on to become stars and even one became a legend. Farooq and Ahmed Johnson split and were mediocre individual stars. D-lo Brown went on to become a superstar and at one point held the Intercontinental Title Belt and European Champion Title Belt simultaneously. Kama Mustafa became one of the most comedic performers and enticed the ladies and fans with his signature slogan, "Pimpin' ain't easy!" and paraded around with a posse of sexy, barely dressed women while being referred to as The Godfather. And Rocky Maivia shot to superstardom in less than few years. Quickly he dropped his last name and performed as The Rock. The People's Champ (as he soon referred to himself) gained so much popularity that he could be listed as a legend in the sport because of his ability to instigate fans and opponents with his signature eye brow raise and finishing moves. Many other factions such as Degeneration X and The Hart Foundation made fans split their loyalties and created friendly rivalries within fanatics.

The characters and factions, although hilarious in their own right, are actually a stroke of marketing genius. Where most television shows appeal to certain demographic groups and others appeal to as many as possible, it is extremely difficult to have a character or plot that interests every group in the country. What the world of professional wrestling does is create characters that fit to almost any specific demographic that you could possibly think of. Hispanics (Rey Mysterio and co.), Southern bad boys (Stone Cold), hippies (Dude Love), Goths (The undertaker) preppy jocks (Shawn Michaels), Alabamans, Canadians, Brits, Muslims, anything and everything. I would guarantee that any viewer could find a character that fits them, appealing to nearly the entire world.

Though it is universally known that the action is staged, prearranged, and outcomes already determined before the ringing of the bell I cannot get over the awesome athleticism that these characters possess. The abuse these guys and gals take is tremendous even with the safety precautions taken. Teeth knocked out, implants bursted, bones broken and more common injuries of strains and pulls must be pronounced in the background of the shows. I used to watch the shows as if they were real and all characters really existed in the real world. Watching these shows now in my early adulthood has given me an even greater appreciation for the showmanship by character and the incredible, outrageous plots that these characters must play out to the last ear flick and pose from the moment they enter the arena until they resign for the night. No wonder many of these performers can make the transition from acting (The Rock and Hulk Hogan and others) so easily.

Because of this I resolve that there is no greater entertainment than fighting
to determine different championship titles with players that live on for ever, all while encased in a never-ending plot that with larger than life villains and heroins.

Waterworld

So the recent weather here in Madison has been utterly miserable this past week. Rain and heat and humidity and more rain. What would you say is the worst part of all this undesirable weather? Puddles, maybe? Or muddy sidewalks? Maybe its the chilling pellets of water hitting your bare skin? My opinion... The Umbrella. Yes. the umbrella is, without question, the worst creation by humanity for these watery conditions.

The personal, hand-held, mobile, temporary shelter barely accomplishes its main objective of keeping its carrier dry from falling rain. It adequately protects users from rain falling perpendicular to the ground. That is where it ends for the nylon canopy.

Immediately rendered useless with the addition of wind to this equation. I have yet to see and umbrella that keeps people dry when there is wind. Not once.

In addition, when the velocity of the wind is a touch greater we can be audience to some of the funniest scenes of everyday life. The wind blows from behind and catches the underside of the umbrella and is abruptly inverted. Adding to the humility is the awesome display that occurs when the carrier is towed away and helpless for the duration of the gust. Leaving the consumer to engineer any way to correct the curvature.

When conditions are perfect for the use of the rain umbrella it is quite effective if using it unaccompanied. Introduce a companion and what happens? The rain from one of the two's umbrella is stopped, diverted outward, and sails onto the other. Completely defeating the initial purpose. Holding two separate umbrellas should be as driven into our heads as don't throw pens or pencils or you'll get your eye poked out. The eight (at least) spokes , attached to an always shaky arm is at the mercy of the gusts, ready at any moment to spear and maim the eyes.

So why bother to open an umbrella in the event of a rain storm? A little rain never hurt anybody . . . "but a lot will kill you" (apologies for the Jumanji quote). But seriously, wear a coat or something with a hood to protect your head and spare your comrades from the added negative externalities (I took economics) associated with this rain shielding device. I am no expert nor have I found any data that supports this claim but the invention of the umbrella could be just as detrimental to society as second-hand smoke.

After using the umbrella for only a handful of times in the second half of my life and once this past week has only reasserted the uselessness of the umbrella.

Until next time, I'll be that guy soaked from head to toe...
